Today’s announcement introduces Kyushu’s one and only international school, the Fukuoka International School.

Do you know there is a school in Fukuoka for foreign children living in Kyushu? There are currently around 200 students, with around 20 different nationalities, between the ages of 3 and 18, learning at the Fukuoka International School. The teaching staff itself comes from varied backgrounds, and is made up of staff with 13 different nationalities.

As you’re ears fill with the sound of English conversation in the halls, you know you are in an international education facility the moment you walk through the doors. The Fukuoka International School was established 24 years ago, born of the concept “to promote the internationalization of Fukuoka, preparing a foundation that supports globalization is necessary."

From there, the school was erected in Fukuoka City’s Sawara ward, through support from the government of Fukuoka, and in cooperation with local private financial interests. Ever since, the school has been involved in a multitude of endeavors and has been an important focal point of international education for the children of foreign residents, with a drive to provide quality education at its core.

It is centered around the motto, “high international academic standards” and is highly regarded both domestically and internationally. The Fukuoka International School is one of the few schools in Japan recognized by the American Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and also authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IB). Graduates 18 years of age or older who come from schools recognized by the WASC, and who have completed a 12 year educational course at such an institution, are qualified to enter universities in Japan as well as those overseas. The IB program, as well, is recognized by universities around the world, permitting IB degree holders to enter their institutions. Graduates from the Fukuoka International School are active in domestic and international universities.

In these ways, the Fukuoka International School is more than just an educational facility for the children of foreigners. More than that, it makes a contribution to the world, from here in Fukuoka, Kyushu, by producing young men and women with skills that make them world-class.

今日は、九州唯一のインターナショナルスクールである「福岡インターナショナルスクール」についてご紹介します。

皆さんは、福岡をはじめとする九州に住む外国の子どもたちを対象に教育を行っている学校があるのをご存じですか？

「福岡インターナショナルスクール」では、現在、3歳から18歳までの約200名の生徒が学んでおり、

その国籍は20か国を超え、先生方の国籍も13か国にのぼります。

校内に入ると、英語の会話が飛び交い、国際教育機関であることを実感します。

そんな「福岡インターナショナルスクール」が設立されたのは、今から24年前のことです。

「福岡県の国際化を推進するためには、国際化を支える基盤の整備が必要」という考えから、

行政や地元経済界等の支援の下に、福岡市早良区に設立されました。

具体的には、福岡インターナショナルスクールは、アメリカ合衆国の学校認定機関である

「WASC（ワスク）」の認定校であり、12年の課程を修了した18歳以上の人に

海外及び日本の大学入学資格が認められます。また、世界の多くの大学が入学資格として認める

「国際バカロレア・ディプロマプログラム（IB）」の認定も受けています。

福岡インターナショナルスクールは、「WASC」と「国際バカロレア・ディプロマプログラム（IB）」の

両方の認定を受けている国内でも数少ない学校の一つであり、同校の卒業生は、

国内外の大学に進学し活躍しています。
