It’s time for end-of-year cleaning both at home and at the office. That means there is going to be a lot more garbage produced than normal in December. Be sure that you are following the correct procedures for disposing of your refuse.

It is illegal to dispose of regular waste, or over-sized garbage, in locations other than those specified. Illegal dumping not only ruins the beauty of the landscape, but also adds to pollution of the environment. In cooperation with the police, the city is stepping up efforts to stop illegal dumping in areas often used for it, by setting up signs, cameras and patrols.

When found guilty of illegal dumping, one is required not only to clean up the waste, but in worst case scenarios, one may be sentenced up to 5 years in prison by police order or fined up to10,000,000 yen.

If you witness illegal dumping or find dumped items, please contact the nearest police station or your local ward office either at the Living Environment Section or the Industrial Waste Advisory Section.

Televisions, refrigerators, freezers, washing machines and dryers, and air conditioners should be disposed of in accordance with the Home Appliance Recycling Law. If you are not able to have old electronics taken up for disposal by the store at which you are buying a replacement model, or cannot bring them to the retail store from which you purchased them for proper disposal, please ask Best Denki store for assistance. Each of these methods of recycling does incur a fee.

Also, please be aware that some people distribute flyers claiming to offer free garbage disposal, and then go around in a light truck to collect, while others set up free waste collection points in vacant lots. Most of them are not licensed garbage collection services and dispose of your items illegally. Please avoid problems and follow the rules for proper garbage disposal.
