Fukuoka city, which has long played the role of a window to Asia in Japan, established the Fukuoka Prize in 1990. The prize looks to honor those who have made remarkable achievements in preserving and creating Asian culture as a contribution to Asia.

As of last year, the prize has been awarded to 105 people, from 27 countries and regions. It has recognized a lot of wonderful winners, such as Nobel Prize winning Muhammad Yunus of Bangladesh and Mo Yan of China.

The 2017 Grand Prize was awarded to a married couple, Pasuk Phongpaichit of Thailand and Chris Baker of England. This was the first time the Fukuoka Prize was awarded jointly. Pasuk is an economist and Chris is a historian. Thailand has had rapid economic development since the 1980s, and the couple has researched the social change there from a wide perspective that straddles their fields of specialty. Their co-authored book has more than 10 volumes, and they are active as international intellectuals. One of their most noted achievements is their English translation of Thailand's most well-known epic poem. The Tale of Khun Chang Khun Phaen is written in an old style of the Thai language and is regarded as difficult to translate into English.

The Academic Prize was awarded to the Chinese administrative scholar and NGO civil society researcher, Wang Ming. Mr. Wang is the number one leading researcher working with NGOs in China. He established the NGO Research Center at China’s Tsinghua University, and opened up the field of public philanthropical research. He put international NGO research into China and dramatically improved the level of research in the field. He has also studied abroad at Kyoto University and Nagoya University, and is fluent in Japanese. He carefully performed first-hand field survey work and actively interacted with residents in the International Forum held in 2013 at the Open Research Center for Minamata Studies and is a bridge between Chinese and Japanese researchers.

For the Arts and Culture Prize, Cambodian minstrel Kong Nay was chosen. Kong Nay is a player of a traditional Cambodian stringed instrument called the Chapey. He was blinded by smallpox at the age of 4 and miraculously survived while being subjected to the civil war and the repression of the Pol Pot era, and is called the "Ray Charles of Cambodia". Even now he continues to play emphatically, improvising with the Chapey and performing with artists in other genres of music, such as with rock or jazz artists, or even orchestras. Furthermore, he actively works to establish training for the next generation of Chapey players.

The award ceremony will be held at ACROS Fukuoka Symphony Hall from 6:30 pm on Thursday, September 21.

A public lecture will be held where you can listen to the winners' stories. The lecture of the Grand Prize winners Pasuk Phongpaichit and Chris Baker, entitled, Of Love and Loss: Three Thai Literary Classics and their Human Messages Today, will take place on Sunday, September 24, at 11:00 am until 1:00 pm in ELGALA HALL’s Main Hall, in Tenjin.

The Academic Prize winner, Mr. Wang Ming, will offer a lecture called Research and Possibility of the Cooperation between China and Japan in Environmental Issues: Today and the Future of Civil Society. It will take place on Saturday, September 23, from 1:00 to 2:30 in the afternoon, also in ELGALA HALL’s Main Hall.

Cambodia’s Soul toward the Future: The World of Kong Nay’s Chapey Music is a lecture that will be offered by Kong Nay, winner of the Arts and Culture Prize. It is also scheduled to take place Saturday, September 23 from 4:00 to 5:30 pm. It will be held at IMS Hall.

예로부터 일본이 아시아와 교류하는데 있어 창구역할을 담당해온 후쿠오카시가 아시아에 대한 국제공헌을 목적으로, 아시아의 훌륭한 문화 보존과 창조에 현저한 업적을 이룬 분들을 표창하는 국제상으로 1990년에 창설한 <후쿠오카 아시아문화상>.

지난해까지 27개국 및 지역의 105명이 수상했으며, 지금까지 노벨상 수상자인 방글라데시의 무하매드 유누스 씨와 중국의 모옌 씨를 비롯해 훌륭한 수상자를 다수 배출한 바 있습니다.

2017년 대상 수상자는 파숙 퐁파이칫 씨와 크리스 베이커 씨로, 후쿠오카 아시아문화상 최초로 공동 수상자가 되었습니다. 두 사람은 태국인과 영국인 부부로 부인인 파숙 씨는 경제학자, 남편인 크리스 씨는 역사학자입니다.
이 두 사람은 연구분야를 초월한 폭넓은 시야로 1980년부터 급속한 경제발전을 이룩해온 태국의 사회변동을 직시해 왔습니다. 공동저서는 10권 이상으로, 국제적 지식인으로 활약하고 있습니다. 이 두사람의 위대한 업적 중 하나로 알려진 것이 태국에서 가장 잘알려진 장편서사시로 태국의 고어로 기술되어 있어 영어 번역이 어렵다고 여겨져 온 [쿤창쿤팬] 영어번역입니다.

학술연구상은 중국 행정학자이자 NGO 시민사회연구자인 왕민 씨가 수상했습니다. 왕민 씨는 중국의 NGO연구의 제일인자로 중국 칭화대학에 NGO연구센터를 설치하고 공익자선연구 분야를 개척. 국제적인 NGO연구를 중국에 도입해 연구수준을 비약적으로 향상시켰습니다. 교토대학과 나고야대학에 유학한 경험도 있어 일본어도 능통합니다. 직접 현장을 방문하는 현장조사를 중시하며, 2013년에 개최된 미나마타학 연구센터 주최의 국제포럼에서는 공해발생현장 주민들과 적극적으로 교류하는 등 일본인 연구자와 가교역할도 하고 있습니다.

예술문화상 수상자는 캄보디아 음유시인 꽁 나이 씨입니다. 꽁 나이 씨는 짜뻐이라는 캄보디아 전통 현악기 연주자로, 만 4세 때 천연두를 앓아 실명했으며, 내전과 폴포트 시대의 탄압 속에 기적적으로 살아남아 [캄보디아의 레이찰스]라고 불립니다.
지금도 정력적으로 연주활동을 하고 있으며, 짜뻐이의 즉흥성을 살려 락과 재즈, 오케스트라 등 다른 장르 음악과 협연활동을 하면서, 차세대 짜뻐이 연주자 육성에도 힘쓰고 있습니다.

수상식은 9월21일(목) 오후 6시 30분부터 아크로스 후쿠오카 심포니홀에서 열립니다.

自古以来作为日本面向亚洲的门户城市福冈市，本着为亚洲做贡献，为那些在创造和保存亚洲优秀文化方面做出卓越贡献的人士颁发的国际性奖项，而在1990年创办「福冈亚洲文化奖」。
截至去年，共颁发给了27个国家及地区105名个人，其中包括诺贝尔奖得主穆哈莫得尤努斯（孟加拉）和中国的莫言，享誉世界的杰出人物。
2017年获奖者已经评出，最高奖大奖是首次由两人联名获得的パースック・ポンパイチット女士和クリス・ベーカー先生。他们是一对夫妇，丈夫是英国人，历史学家，妻子是泰国人，经济学家
夫妇二位进行了跨界研究，从更加广阔的视角观察1980年以后泰国经济飞速发展的社会变化，著书10本以上，在国际学术界享有盛名。其中二位光辉的业绩之一是将泰国著名古典『クンチャーン・クンペーン物語』翻成了英文介绍给世界。
获得今年学术研究奖的是中国行政学者NGO・市民社会研究者王 名。王 名是中国第一位非政府组织的研究者。在清华大学建立了NGO研究中心，开拓了公益慈善研究领域。将国际上的NGO研究引入中国，明显提高了国内该方面的水平。本人在京都大学和名古屋大学留学过，所以擅长日语。他总是亲自前往现场，进行调查，在2013年召开的水俣病研究中心主办的国际论坛的时候，积极和受
到公害的当地人交流，成为了日中学者的桥梁。
