Fukuoka City is looking to develop itself as a city where each and every citizen finds it easy and fulfilling to live under the concept of universal design and the slogan, Universal Fukuoka City.

The concept of universal design is that people can live and use products or services freely, in comfort, regardless of physical disabilities, citizenship, gender or age. This requires development and installment of various devices and methods into the landscape of life in Fukuoka. In order to raise awareness of this movement, the Universal Fukuoka City Festival will bring a multitude of events to different areas across the city this month.

For example, on October 20th from 1 to 4 PM at Resola NTT Yume-Tenjin Hall, the Universal Fukuoka City Business Seminar will be held. It will illustrate the merits of incorporating universal design into industry.

Then, on October 26th from 1 PM in the afternoon, there will be an award ceremony recognizing individuals and groups that have developed outstanding products and services using universal design. It will be held at the auditorium on the 15th floor of Fukuoka City Hall. The author of the best-selling book, Gotai Fumanzoku, Hirotada Ototake will give a memorial lecture as well as a talkshow with Mayor Takashima.

And Fukuoka also has one more announcement about a fun learning experience event that crosses generations, fun for all ages, from children to adults. It’s the Environment Festival Fukuoka 2014.

At the venue, an "eco-flag" made of used clothing and used towels will be waived high while city high school and university students show off their pet-bottle cap art. There will also be over 40 booths with activities such as crafting your own original eco-bag, paper milling with recycled materials, hand-powered generators for you to try and fun quizzes on the environment. There will be lots of other "eco-events" there for you to enjoy as well!

It all takes place from 10 AM through 4 PM on Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th, at the Fureai Plaza, located on the west side of Fukuoka City Hall. Come out and refresh your knowledge about things you already do, and learn new things you can start doing, to preserve the environment.

The Grippi Campaign 2014 will also taking place on Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th in Tenjin Central Park. It's an event centered on increasing the amount of greenery around the city.
