This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Fukuoka City Museum, located in Momochi-hama of the city’s Sawara Ward.

Right now the special exhibition “The World of Yamamoto Sakubei” is opened in commemoration of the 25th anniversary. Sakubei Yamamoto, who worked in the Chikuho area coal mines, has left the images of the coal mine work and life of the time in his coal mine paintings. The work is highly praised both domestically and abroad. Four years ago, the 589 paintings featured in the work were, for the first time in Japan, included in the Memory of the World Register by UNESCO.

This exhibition will feature 120 of the registered works. The coal mining area and beginning days of town life in the Chikuho area are a modern day culture heritage illustrated through the mine. There are several world heritage pieces throughout the world, but a portrayal of the modern coal industry as seen through the eyes of one of its workers is a rare find. This is a chance to see some really special items on exhibit.

The first session of the exhibition will be open until Sunday, July 5th. The latter half of the exhibition will be open from Tuesday, July 7th through Sunday, July, 26th. The exhibit fee is 1,300 yen for the general public, 900 yen for high school and university students, and 500 yen for elementary and junior high school students.

Also, at the Movie Hall Cine-la in the adjacent Fukuoka City Public Library, a special program called “ TANKŌ NO KIOKU” or “Reminiscing Kyushu’s Coal Mine Era” will be held. For further information, please search "uebu shinela" in Japanese and check out the homepage.

And, after that at the Fukuoka City Museum, the "Sekigahara Exhibition" will be held in commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the death of the Ieyasu Tokugawa shogunate, and the "New Exhibition of Nakoku State" an exhibition exploring the local history, is planned as a special event for the museum's 25th anniversary. And Fukuoka City would also like to let you know about its Delivery Lecture Service. It is a lecture where public servants of the city explain what projects the city is involved with, as well as provide information useful for living in Fukuoka.

Last year, it was held a total of 683 times and saw an attendance of over 20,000 people. This year, the lecture is on "the Fukuoka City Special Zone for Global Startups and Job Creation ". In addition, there will be a health lecture on preventing periodontal disease and other lectures. In fact, a total of 200 lectures, including 12 new lectures, have been put together. Information highlighting the themes of the lectures is available at the 1st floor Information Plaza of city hall, at public halls, and at information corners of each ward office and community centers. Take a minute and see what these lectures are all about!

To apply, please use the application form available in the information pack, or download an application from the Fukuoka City homepage and submit it to the appropriate section of government at least 14 days prior to the date of the lecture. These lectures are aimed at groups of 10 or more people who are Fukuoka city residents, or who work or attend school in the city. Lecture, transportation and other such fees are free of charge.
