On Air: Fukuoka City Information/2016.07.09(Sat)/09:00～

2016 marks the 60th anniversary of the normalization of Japan-Philippines diplomatic relations. To commemorate the event, Fukuoka City will hold a public speech on July 23rd, given by Dr. Reynaldo C. Ileto, the Academic Award Laureate of the 14th Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize.

Historian Reynaldo C. Ileto taught at the University of the Philippines, the Australian National University and the National University of Singapore until his retirement in 2012. He was also a visiting senior scholar at Kyoto University and Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. At the event, he will be presenting the keynote speech, entitled The Philippines in the 20th Century: Child, Friend and Foe of Empires.

In his lecture, he will present a panorama of Philippine history from the 1898 secession from Spain to the present, including the country’s current situation. After the keynote, there will be an open discussion with Dr. Hiromu Shimizu who teaches at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, Kyoto University. Dr. Shimizu is a specialist in Southeast Asian regional studies and cultural anthropology. Starting in 2015, he has since served as Chair of the Academic Prize Selection Committee for the Fukuoka Prize.

The event will be held at the Middle Hall on the 7th floor of Elgala Hall on Saturday, July 23rd, beginning at 1:30 PM and ending at 3:30 PM. Elgala Hall is located in Fukuoka’s Chuo ward in Tenjin 1-chome. There will be simultaneous Japanese-English translation.
