【Reusable Trash Bags: “Fuku Reji”】
As the year-end and New Year season approaches, we tend to go shopping quite a bit more and also buy quite a bit more. While out shopping, have you seen or heard of the convenient "Fuku Reji" bag that you can use to carry your shopping and also use for disposing of trash? These bags are now available near checkout counters at convenience stores, supermarkets, and drugstores across Fukuoka City.
While the widespread use of reusable bags has reduced the reliance on plastic shopping bags following the introduction of charges for plastic shopping bags, Fukuoka City still disposes of approximately 2,600 tons of plastic shopping bags annually. To address this, Fuku Reji was introduced as a new eco-friendly option for reducing plastic waste during shopping.
If you forget your reusable bag or find yourself needing extra space for an unexpected shopping trip, consider choosing Fuku Reji. These bags not only help reduce plastic waste but also save on costs.
They are available in two sizes, 15 liters for 15 yen or 10 liters for ten yen. After using them as shopping bags, you can repurpose them as designated household trash bags for combustible waste. You can dispose of these bags following the usual rules for trash collection in your area, putting them out in the proper location on your trash collection day for Fukuoka City.
The design of the bags, created by artist Kazuhiko Ifuku, symbolizes a "circle of compassion" born from the idea of individuals caring for others and nature, fostering connections and cycles of thoughtfulness.
So, when you need a shopping bag at convenience stores, supermarkets, or drugstores, choose Fuku Reji to help reduce plastic waste!

【Indian Consulate General】
A new Indian Consulate General will soon be established here in Fukuoka. Currently, the only Indian consulate in Japan is in Osaka, making Fukuoka the second location. Fukuoka already hosts consulates from the United States, China, South Korea, Vietnam, and Thailand. With the expectation of more Indian nationals and companies working in Kyushu, the consulate is set to open in December.
The new consulate will issue visas, ensure the safety and support of Indian residents, and serve as a center for sharing information on India’s economy and culture. Fukuoka, the vibrant gateway city to Asia is about to get even livelier!

World Aids Day
First is about World Aids Day on December 1st. Every year around the 1st of December, around the world, various events and activities take place, to deepen awareness and understanding of AIDS.
Even after being infected by HIV, definitive symptoms may not appear for a period of several years sometimes and so it is believed that there are a number of people who have been infected but will not be diagnosed until the onset of AIDS. By detecting HIV infection early and receiving the appropriate health care and treatment, the onset of AIDS can be delayed.
Since there can be a period of several years without any noticeable symptoms even after infection, it’s important to get tested early, if you think you are at risk. At the health and welfare centers of each ward, HIV screening is offered. This screening is free of charge and anonymous. Screening is only on certain days so make sure you check which days before you go.
And, I don't know if you know this but the red ribbon is a symbol that shows awareness and solidarity with those affected by AIDS. The red ribbon announces to others that you have no prejudice against people affected by AIDS and gives that message that we will not discriminate against those living with AIDS. The red ribbon days are from the 1st to 7th of December and over this period, the Hakata Port Tower and the Fukuoka Red Brick Culture Museum will be lit up in red in support. So for World AIDS Day, let's all take the time to learn the correct information about AIDS and how to prevent it.
Illegal dumping of garbage or Fly-tipping
I hope this doesn't really need to be said, but dumping oversized garbage and household waste in the mountains, forests, by the seaside, by rivers, on the road, or in parks is illegal.
In Fukuoka City, at the end of the year, many people do a big house clean and a lot of garbage is produced. As such, December has been designated as “Illegal Dumping Prevention Reinforcement Month”. Activities will be undertaken to strengthen measures to prevent the illegal dumping of waste.
Fukuoka City has, in cooperation with the police, installed surveillance cameras and warning signs in places where illegal dumping is common and will carry out patrols of those areas.
Home appliances like TV's, refrigerators and freezers, washing machines and dryers, air conditioners and the like, are all subject to the Home Appliance Recycling Law and there is a set way to dispose of them. If you are buying replacement appliances, the shop will pick up your old appliance. If the shop will not take the old appliance, ask your local Yamada Denki to pick them up, or request collection from Renet Japan Recycle or SG Moving, disposal companies which have an agreement with the city. Please keep in mind that you will have to cover recycling fees and collection and transportation fees with these companies.
Also, when getting rid of your pc, please ask the manufacturer or contact Renet Japan Recycle to collect your PCs.
When making a request for the collection of unwanted items from your home, be sure to contact a licensed waste collection and transportation company. Using unlicensed companies can lead to issues such as illegal dumping or unexpectedly high fees, so please avoid using their services.

Eliminating Drunk Driving
If you are a recent resident of Fukuoka you may not know about this incident but for those of you who have been here for awhile....did you know about the drunk driving accident that occurred in Fukuoka City on August 25, 2006?
This year marks 18 years since that drunk driving accident which killed three children on the Umino-nakamichi-ohashi Bridge in the Higashi Ward.
In response to this tragedy, Fukuoka City has undertaken various initiatives to eliminate drunk driving, but it still persists.
However, drunk driving has not disappeared.
Drunk driving is a crime.
You must not drive a car, motorcycle, or bicycle after drinking alcohol.
You must not lend your vehicle to a person who has been drinking alcohol, nor should you encourage or offer alcohol to someone who intends to drive.
You must not get into a car knowing that the driver has been drinking.
Driving under the influence of alcohol lowers your attention and judgment, which can delay your ability to detect danger, lead to excessive speeding, and increase the risk of traffic accidents.
Also, if you see someone driving in the way I'm going to describe, it's possible that person is driving drunk. If you see someone driving like this, please report it to emergency services by calling 110. Signs of a drunk driver include stopping the car well before the stop line when stopping at a stop sign, not starting the car up again when the traffic light turns green, weaving or unsteady driving and repeatedly accelerating or decelerating abruptly. Each and every person needs to take action and say “I will never drink and drive, I won't let others do it and I won't turn a blind eye!”
Let's all work together to eliminate drunk driving!

【Hakataori】
Do you know about Hakataori, the traditional craft of Fukuoka and Hakata? Hakataori is a type of silk fabric primarily produced in the Hakata area of Fukuoka City. It is one of Japan's traditional crafts, taking several months to half a year to complete, through multiple processes and the hands of skilled artisans.
When people think of Hakataori, they think of Hakata obi. These obis are popular as kimono belts due to their sturdy fabric that is resistant to damage even when pulled tightly. They are also favored by sumo wrestlers because the obi doesn't loosen easily and can be firmly fastened, characterized by the distinctive "squeak" of the silk when tightened.
There are several patterns in Hakataori, but the representative "Kenjogara" pattern has been incorporated as a symbol in various parts of Fukuoka, such as at JR Hakata Station and Fukuoka Airport. Currently, an exhibition of Hakataori items for everyday use is being held at the Hakata Traditional Craft Center in Momochihama, Sawara Ward. The exhibition and sale include about 200 items, such as stationery like ballpoint pens and pen cases, small items like wallets, pouches, and business card holders, which are recommended for use in business for your self or as gifts for friends and family. The exhibition runs until this Sunday, the 23rd.
The Hakata Traditional Craft Center is a free facility that exhibits and introduces excellent works of traditional crafts associated with Fukuoka and Hakata. On the first, second, and third Sundays of each month, they also offer traditional craft experience classes.
It's a great opportunity to casually experience Hakata's culture, so please visit when you have the chance. For more details, please check the Hakata Traditional Craft Center's website.

【Hakata Dontaku Port Festival】
Coming up in just about a week is the "Hakata Dontaku Port Festival" , a traditional festival that livens up the Golden Week even more in Fukuoka! Known as the "festival for the citizens of Fukuoka," this year it will be held over two days on May 3rd and 4th.
This festival, which has a history of over 840 years, originates from Hakata's traditional performance art called "Matsubayashi." It is famous for its unique parade where people dressed in vibrant costumes dance and march through the town holding a "shamoji" or rice paddle that they use in their dance.
In addition to the parade, various events are held throughout the city, including performances of traditional arts, live artist shows, and food stalls that operate all day, offering Fukuoka specialties like Umegae Mochi.
The "Hakata Dontaku Port Festival" attracts many tourists from both Japan and abroad, bustling with over 2 million people each year. It's an excellent opportunity to experience the history, culture, and vitality of Hakata. So, if you are here in Fukuoka over the Golden Week, definitely go and check it out.
【Fukuoka City Information】
I guess like me, many of you probably ride bicycles on a regular basis.
If you are new here, do you know the rules and manners around riding bicycles here in Japan?
In Japan, bicycles, as a rule, are supposed to ride on the left side of the roadway.
Pedestrians have priority on sidewalks, so when riding on sidewalks, please ride slowly on the side of the road.
All bicyclists should wear helmets and you need to make sure you have a bicycle light to turn on at night.
Two people riding on one bicycle or riding side by side is prohibited. It is also important to never drink alcohol and then ride a bicycle.
One more thing is to make sure you don't ride a bicycle while holding an umbrella, using a cell phone or even listening to headphones as doing any of these things while riding is dangerous.
If you need to park your bicycle, make sure it is parked in a bicycle parking lot.
Bicycles parked in areas other than bicycle parking lots, like on streets or in parks , are considered to be obstructive or a nuisance to pedestrians and end up being considered abandoned bicycles and can be subject to removal.
Fukuoka City charges a fee of 2,500 yen to have a removed bicycle returned, and if it is not picked up within a certain period of time, it will be disposed of.
Fortunately, to keep your bicycle safe, there are a number of parking areas near shopping malls and stations that offer free parking for a set period of time.
Another thing to know about cycling here is that, anyone who rides a bicycle in Fukuoka City must purchase bicycle insurance.
If you have an accident on your bicycle, you may have to pay a lot of money to the other party involved in the accident. If you have bicycle insurance, for example, if you injure someone while riding your bicycle, the insurance will pay for medical treatment and other expenses instead of you. So, make sure you have bicycle insurance in case of an accident.
Bicycles are a great way to get around and are environmentally friendly, but it's important to know the rules and manners as well to have a safe ride around the city!

【BELGIAN BEER WEEKEND】
We're now in that time of year when it feels good to spend time outdoors, so I've got information about a fun event that lets you enjoy the outdoors and some good beer. The "BELGIAN BEER WEEKEND" starts this Wednesday, the 17th and goes to Sunday, the 21st, at Fukuoka City Hall, on the west side, at the Fureai Square.
If you like beer, this is the event to check out. Belgium is a “beer heaven” with over 1600 types of beer being brewed there, so impressive that it has been registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. And at this event, some of those beers will be coming here to Fukuoka, saving you the price of a plane ticket!
You can enjoy 12 types of Belgian beer, including representative types like "White Beer" and "Fruit Beer," totaling 52 varieties. Along with the beer, you can enjoy traditional Belgian dishes such as tasty Belgian fried potatoes "Frites" and "Carbonade," a stewed beef dish, all of which will taste great with your beer.
IN addition, "MaxPacemaker" from Belgium will visit Fukuoka and energize the venue with a techno sound on weekend nights along with a DJ from LOVEFM who will be there to liven up the stage with talks and games!
On weekdays, the festival is from 4pm to 10 pm and on Saturdays and Sundays, from 11 am to 8pm.
So this week, why not enjoy Belgian beer, food, and music in the open air on a pleasant spring weekend unique to this season?

Rules about putting out the garbage
There are a lot of people who are starting a new chapter in their lives this month and that does typically mean buying new things or getting rid of old things. Which brings us to garbage and the rules around garbage here.
In Fukuoka City, garbage is separated into three types. There is burnable, nonburnable and plastic pet bottles and glass garbage. You can buy the bags for each type of garbage at convenience stores and supermarkets, so make sure you use the Fukuoka City garbage bags for throwing things out.
The red bag is for burnable garbage. This is used for garbage like paper waste, food scraps, clothes and plastics.
The blue bag is for nonburnable garbage which includes things like empty cans and glass or ceramics.
And the yellow bag is for plastic pet bottles and glass bottles.
The day on which garbage is picked up is specific to your neighborhood. Burnable garbage is picked up twice a week and nonburnable and glass bottles and plastic pet bottles are picked up once a month.
Garbage is picked up late at night so garbage should be put out between sunset and midnight on your collection day in the designated location.
If you need to find out when garbage is picked up in your neighborhood, you can do so by adding the official Fukuoka City LINE account to your friend's list. Set your location when you add the account and you will get notifications for the pickup day.
And, if you type in the name of the garbage you want to throw out, the account will tell you which bag you should put it in, so it's a pretty handy service.
If you can't fit something you want to throw out in one bag because it is too big, it is considered over-sized garbage and needs to be thrown out through a different process. For over-sized garbage, pick-up can be arranged if you contact the Fukuoka City Oversized Garbage center, or Sodai Gomi Uketsuke in Japanese, by phone, on the internet or through LINE. They will tell you how much it will cost to throw away the item, where to put it and on what day and time they will pick it up.
If you decide to call the Oversized Garbage Center, you can call (092-731-1153). They have support for 18 different languages. There is also a QR code service that provides information on garbage disposal rules in 10 different languages. Just check the Fukuoka City website for that QR code.

【Cherry blossom viewing】
It's just about time for cherry blossom season here in Fukuoka, so let me introduce a few spots to go and do a bit of hanami, or cherry blossom viewing.
First, we've got Maizuru Park, a 15 minute walk from Tenjin. The park is known for housing the Fukuoka Castle ruins, a symbol of the park you might say. At the ruins, you'll find yourself surrounded by more than 1000 beautiful cherry trees, with a wonderful light up at night during the blossom season. Along the moat, you'll also see the cherry trees reflected on the water, making for a spectacular sight. During the season, the grounds are filled with food stalls and food trucks, so that people can enjoy hanami even at night. You might want to stop at Imaya, one of the stands, for a delicious hamburger to enjoy as you do hanami. Some other places to consider for hanami are the Fukuoka City Zoo and Botanical Garden, Uminonakamichi Seaside Park in Higashi Ward and Aburayama's Citizen Park where you enjoy walking among the trees for some forest bathing and cherry blossom viewing. Finally, Atago Shrine, where you'll find the cherry tree of good luck, is one more place to visit. Of course, the list doesn't stop there in Fukuoka City. In many parks and streets, even in the middle of the city, you can enjoy hanami, so enjoy it to the fullest while the cherry trees are in full bloom. Here's to a great hanami season this year!

Disposing of Garbage from Moving Home
I mentioned that it's moving season now that spring is here. That means that this time tends to be when we see a lot more oversized garbage and so I've got some information on how to use the Oversized Garbage Disposal Call Center.
The first way to do it is by applying for pickup with the Oversized Garbage Disposal Call Center. First, contact them by phone or by internet, or even through the Official Fukuoka City Line Account, to put in your application and then purchase the appropriate oversized garbage disposal ticket at the convenience store or other shops. The garbage pickup day will be roughly one week after you apply. You must put out the garbage by 8:30am on the collection day in the designated spot.
The phone number for the Oversized Garbage Disposal Call Center is 092-731-1153. Again, that number is 092-731-1153. If you apply via the internet or Line, you can do so at your convenience, 24 hours a day.
For TV's, refrigerators, freezers, washing machines, clothes dryers and air conditioners, according to the home appliance recycling law, there are specific guidelines for disposal. You can have the old appliance removed by the firm installing the new one or you can contact the store where you originally bought the appliance. You can also contact the Yamada Denki in your city about disposal.
Recycling fees as well as fees for collection and transport will be required.
Citizen's Natural Disaster Prevention Day
To continue, I have one more announcement. Fukuoka City has designated March 20 as "Citizens' Disaster Prevention Day" to keep the experience of the March 20, 2005 Fukuoka Prefecture Seiho-oki Earthquake from being forgotten.
In recent years, major disasters such as earthquakes and heavy rain have occurred in many areas. We never know when a disaster will strike. In order for each of us to take appropriate actions when a disaster strikes, it is important to be prepared on a daily basis.
Please check the Fukuoka City website for hazard maps and information on disaster prevention, and again prepare and confirm what to take with you when you evacuate. Let's take this "Citizens' Disaster Prevention Day" as an opportunity to think about disaster prevention for the safety of yourself, your family, and your community.

【Bonenkai-Year End Parties】
The end of the year is approaching and we are right in the middle of the Bonenkai, or "year-end party" season. How is it for you? I'm sure you've heard that word, Bonenkai kicking around quite a lot! In Japan, December is the time for people at work, in the community, and among friends to shake off everything that was hard or felt like it was dragging them down in the past year, and instead welcome the New Year with a fresh outlook! In Japan, we have the bonenkai or "Year-End Party," an event to help us do that. It is also a chance to get together to appreciate each other's efforts, so it is common for whole work teams or groups of friends to go out to dinner, and have a drink all together." Everyone toasts to "good work done for the year~" and usually enjoys a nice meal and a good time.
The Japanese phrase that is often said at these gatherings is "Kyou ha bureikou” and it basically means to enjoy the time without worrying about your position or title. In sum, relax, kick back and have fun. This phrase does seem to express a very Japanese cultural situation as people do often hesitate in situations because of what they think their position or title in a situation is, especially among seniors at a company It's important to relax every now and then and you should, but don't get too carried away. I wonder if it's difficult to find that balance sometimes. Also, don't drink too much and forget everything about that evening when you are out enjoying a Bonenkai party!
It's a little early, but I'll say thank you for all of your hard work this year!

Ward office consultation and putting out the garbage over the New Year Holidays
Now, I have some information from Fukuoka City. Over the New Year's holidays, there are a few changes to ward office consultation hours and the days on which you can put out the garbage. For ward offices, please be aware that these places will be closed from Friday the 29thof December to Wednesday the 3rd of January. In the days before and after the new year holidays, the ward office consultation counters will be busy so make sure you give yourself plenty of time when you go there.
Also, from Sunday the 31st of December to Wednesday the 3rd of January, please do not put your garbage out for pick up. The last day to put out burnable garbage for scheduled pick up is Saturday the 30th of December. Scheduled garbarge pick-up will resume on Thursday the 4th of January. If the regularly scheduled garbage days in your area are Wednesday and Sunday, you may put your garbage out on Saturday, the 30th of December for pick up. For nonburnable garbage and glass and pet bottles, if Monday January 1st is your regular day to put them out, instead they can be put out beforehand on Friday, December 22nd. If Tuesday January 2nd is the regular day, put the nonburnables out on Friday, December 29th. For areas where Wednesday, January 3rd is a regular pickup day, nonburnables will be picked up instead on Friday, January 5th.
Also, applications and pickup for oversized garbage will be stopped between Friday, December 29th to Wednesday, January 3rd, so please be aware of that.
Spend the New Year's Holiday safely
Fukuoka City wants you to enjoy your winter holidays safely and enjoyably and has a few tips to share.
From the end of the year to the start of the new year, there are a lot of opportunities to drink alcohol. So, make sure, 100%, that you don't drink and drive, don't make others drink and drive, never allow someone to drink and drive and don't ignore someone who would drink and drive. Even cycling after drinking is against the law.
And it's important to remember that even the next day you might have some alcohol in your system or will be hungover. In that case, even if you think you only have a little bit of alcohol left in your system, it doesn't mean you should drive, because you shouldn't.
Also, every year, the end of the year sees more and more traffic accidents. If you are out late at night, make sure you are wearing bright or reflective clothes that are easy for drivers to notice. And if you are driving, make sure you turn your headlights on earlier in the evening.
Next, we have a warning for you about bag snatching incidents. There have been a number of these crimes from the evening to midnight in places where there are few people around. A lot of these incidents have occurred with the criminals riding motorbikes and snatching bags as they pass by. To avoid being involved in such an incident, make you carry your bag on the side opposite to the road and pay attention to your surroundings, making sure you look back behind you if you sense signs of people or hear a motorbike.
Protect yourself and the things that are important to you and have a safe and enjoyable winter holiday.
